Update Skype voor Windows 4.2.0.187

Met Skype is het mogelijk om door middel van tekst, spraak of beeld, of een combinatie daarvan, over een internetverbinding met andere Skype-gebruikers te communiceren. In versie 4.2 is onder andere de geluidskwaliteit verbeterd in situaties waar slechts beperkte bandbreedte beschikbaar is, kan er van 720p high definition video gebruik gemaakt worden en is de standaardinstelling voor instant messaging nu ‘alleen voor contacten op mijn lijstje’, om zo de privacy beter te waarborgen.

- Clicking on the webcamera settings may cause Skype to crash.

- Sharing a region of the screen to a 3.8 Skype client may cause the receiver on the 3.8 client to see shared region improperly

Update Miranda IM 0.9.2

Dit opensource-instantmessagingprogramma wordt alleen voor Windows ontwikkeld en biedt standaard onder andere ondersteuning voor ICQ, irc, MSN, AIM, Jabber, Facebook, Gadu-Gadu en Yahoo. De download is nog geen 1,8MB groot en daarmee krijg je een sober en licht programma. Zowel de functionaliteit als het uiterlijk van het programma kunnen echter met meer dan 350 verschillende add-ons en plug-ins geheel naar eigen wens worden aangepast. Miranda IM is daarmee een van de meest aanpasbare im-clients voor Windows.

Update Nimbuzz 1.3.0

Staat je instant messenger nagenoeg altijd paraat, maar zijn er ook vrienden of kennissen die zich op een ander IM-netwerk bevinden? Dan zet je een multiprotocollaire IM-client als Nimbuzz in. Deze is zowel voor de pc als voor de Mac.
Na de installatie maak je eerst een (gratis) Nimbuzz-account aan. Er verschijnt nu een venster dat veel weg heeft van een klassieke IM-tool als Live Messenger.
Wanneer je hier echter Contact toevoegen aanklikt, merk je meteen het verschil: je kunt namelijk uit verschillende community’s putten. Naast Nimbuzz zelf zijn dat onder meer nog AIM, Facebook, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, MySpace en Yahoo. Wil je daar ook Skype aan toevoegen, dan moet je vooralsnog je toevlucht nemen tot de mobiele variant van Nimbuzz.
Alle toegevoegde contacten verschijnen nu in één contactvenster en laten zich voortaan van hieruit bereiken, na slechts een enkele log-in.
Groeperen
Je kunt je contacten over de verschillende community’s heen ook groeperen en bijvoorbeeld alle contacten in een bepaalde groep in één keer een bericht en/of een bestand meesturen. Chatten in een groep is eveneens mogelijk.
Het chatvenster oogt fris en overzichtelijk, maar veel meer dan tekst en een aantal smileys doorsturen, zit er niet in.
Buzz sturen
Ook handig: als je je telefoonnummer hebt opgegeven en de Buzz-functie in Nimbuzz hebt geactiveerd, kan iemand die met jou wil chatten je een ‘buzz’ toesturen wanneer je offline blijkt. Het Nimbuzz-telefoonnummer verschijnt dan in het display, waarna je alsnog online kunt gaan. Jammer genoeg blijkt deze functie tijdens onze tests niet te werken.
Bellen naar vaste lijnen en mobiele nummers kan eveneens (NimbuzzOut), maar zulke voipgesprekken zijn uiteraard niet gratis. Vanuit de applicatie kun je wel doorklikken naar een online bestelformulier, waar je een tegoed van minstens tien euro kunt aanschaffen.

Update Pidgin IM 2.7.3

Dit multiprotocol instantmessagingprogramma kan overweg met de netwerken van AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, irc, MSN, MySpaceIM, QQ, Silc, Simple, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo en Zephyr. Tijdens de installatie kan uit maar liefst zeventig verschillende talen worden gekozen en kan spellingscontrole worden toegevoegd. Binaries zijn beschikbaar voor Windows, maar de broncode kan onder Linux worden gecompileerd en is prima in Gnome en KDE te integreren. De Mac OS X-port wordt uitgebracht onder de naam Adium. In versie 2.6.4 is eindelijk het probleem opgelost dat Pidgin niet de aangepaste naam van MSN-contacten onthield.

- Fix connecting to servers using BOSH and authenticating with DIGEST-MD5 when libpurple was built with Cyrus SASL support.
Yahoo/Yahoo JAPAN
- Renamed “Use account proxy for SSL connections” to “Use account proxy for HTTP and HTTPS requests” and tied the option to HTTP requests too.
- Properly detect HTTP proxy server use when the HTTP proxy is the global proxy server, an account-level non-HTTP proxy server is configured, and the “Use account proxy for HTTP and HTTPS requests” account option is turned off. This fixes connecting for some HTTP proxy servers.
- Fall back to connecting to scsa.msg.yahoo.com (not configurable) if the HTTP-based connect server lookup fails. This does not work for Yahoo JAPAN accounts.
- Fix file transfers that get stuck with “Waiting for transfer to begin”.

Microsoft heeft een nieuwe versie van Windows Live Messenger 2009 vrijgegeven. Windows Live Messenger stelt gebruikers in staat om met elkaar te chatten, bestanden uit te wisselen en elkaar te zien via de webcam. De 2009-versie maakt het mogelijk om sms’jes naar anderen te versturen. Verder is de contactenlijst flink onder handen genomen: contacten kunnen niet alleen in groepen ingedeeld worden, maar het is ook mogelijk om contacten bovenaan als ‘Favorieten’ in te stellen. Ten slotte is het ook mogelijk om het uiterlijk van Windows Live Messenger aan te passen.
